By now everybody knows the story of the Chik-Fil-A saga and the comments heard ’round the world, etc. I won’t rehash them.

No, this is more about the odd result and shift in ideology that came from it. See…I’m confused now. For the longest time, the LGBT was being publicly persecuted for, well, living. The life they lived in direct contrast to how some segments of society believed was “right” and were targeted via legislation, hate crimes, and just all around ignorant intolerance. Regardless of how you feel about homosexuality and gay marriage, the truth is, what people do in their homes shouldn’t be anybody else’s concern.

Moving on. Well a strange thing happened after Chik-Fil-A Dan Cathy made his now controversial remarks…the intolerance dynamic took an odd shift. All of a sudden city mayors were stating (and attempting) to bar what is a legitimate business from entering their city limits. Boston’s mayor, Thomas Menino, publicly stated that he’d attempt to deny Chik-Fil-A’s ability to open a store in the city.

What?

Chicago mayor, Rahm Emanuel, blasted Chik-Fil-A, and DC’s mayor Vincent Gray said that DC is no place for “hate chicken”.

Say heffa say what?

So somehow, the best way to battle intolerance is with more…intolerance? Somewhere along the way, individuals who were denied their humanity and had to fight (and win in some states) for the right to actually get married decided that Dan Cathy wasn’t entitled to free speech. Now, the very thing that so many people have fought for and rallied for over time – the ability to be different and have a different opinion – has come under fire by the very folks who spent time attempting to ensure it was okay to differ.

Freedom of speech? F*ck that. Speak your mind and we’re going to attempt to block you from bringing your legitimate business into our city. Where dey do dat at? This entire debacle has confused me to high hell. And for the first time in my life I felt…conundrummed about chicken.

See, I couldn’t go to Chik-Fil-A on the Wednesday that same-sex haters decided to all go despite the fact that in my heart, I felt like NOT going was a slap in the face to free speech. When did chicken become so important anyway?

All of a sudden, the types of issues that were usually perpetrated by those who were considered hate mongers were being practiced by those normally on the wrong side of a hate crime. For instance, a Chik-Fil-A in Frederick, MD, recently opened after being vandalized…

…with gay pride flags and stickers??!?!??!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?

Da hell??

A Frederick, Md., Chick-fil-A was visited by vandals late Saturday night. Police arrived early Sunday morning to find stickers promoting marriage equality and a gay pride flag on the windows.

The restaurant, located on on Urbana Pike, opened Monday for the first time since the stickering. Chik-fil-A franchises are always closed on Sundays.

This is at least the third Chick-fil-A across the country to be vandalized since the company’s president spoke out against same-sex marriage.

Josh Levin, campaign manager for Marylanders for Marriage Equality, issued a statement that reads in part: “We abhor any vandalism or disrespect in this campaign…. We encourage our supporters to have conversations with people they know who may be undecided on the issue.”

How can anybody who has been through what that community has gone through resort to the very tactics that were often used against them to make a (wrong) point?

I understand that Chik-Fil-A became the face of conflicting ideologies but what does it say about people in general when the actions of the “wronged” group become as non-sensical as the actions of the “wrong” group? Hell, I’m sure that even Republicans were confused by this turn of events because for the longest, they held the baton for over zealous action on the parts of some of their ultra conservative membership. But if the ultra conservatives and ultra liberals produce the same results when the ball is in their court…

…who can I run to?

For the first time, the conservatives have a leg to stand on. A difference of opinion – the thing that brought us all to where we are now – that stands in contrast to the trending societal “norm” (debateable term, I know) or perhaps societal “okay” is all of a sudden worthy of ridicule and shaming. How can you scream for rights if you’re also willing to spit in the face of somebody else’s rights? Right?

I realize this is a contentious topic, but am I the only one who is noticing how we’re shifting from intolerant to tolerant to intolerance for the tolerance that is not accepted by the formerly intolerant groups?

What’s really going on??

Does anybody have any rights anymore???
